My husband and I purchased our home in May of 2007, in July we get a notifcication that we owe for 2006. In our contract it states that we owe 2007 and on, but not 2006. How do we go about clearing this up? Who do we talk to?

Town/city tax collector and possibly the assessors office as well.

Before you jump to any conclusions, have a look at your HUD-1 closing statement. If the taxes were unpaid for 2006, you should have received a credit from seller's funds for the 2006 taxes. If you did, then YOU owe the tax now as you were already compensated for them.

As boston already said, in virtually every real estate transfer the seller credits the buyer for the real estate taxes for the past year payable in the next(current) year

ie real estate taxes for 2006 payable in 2007

The previous owner is responsible for this. You need to take all the paperwork pertaining to the purchase of the home to the local tax office and get them to take your name off the receivable for any bill prior to when you closed.

First, call your realtor or mortgage lender. They can tell you how to go about getting it cleared up. Seems to me that the previous owner should be responsible but if you have something written to deny that the fine print may get you! Good luck!
