The Key is moderation. You should never and i stress never clean the whole tank out. As your tank continues to develop get gains bacteria that is important for a healthy thank. Not to mention your fish. It very stressful on them which are one of the reason we do partial water changes. Even when cleaning the algae in your tank you should do it in moderation or risk having cloudy water and unhappy fish. Now if you’re just starting your tank unless you have a lot of fish you’re a long way, at least 3 months from needing a gravel change. (removing water from the base or gravel level of the tank to remove access food and waste) Just remember to feed your fish small amounts even if they seem like the begging for more. Moderation Good Luck

You should NEVER, EVER do that unless you want every single thing in your tank to die. You should never do more than 50%.

I would think it would depend on what you have in the water tank (quantity and type of fish)
