Cheques are one of the most unsafe methods of payment!
EVEN when they've cleared in your account they are not safe

It depends on where you are from as cheques are treated slightly differently in some countries.

In the UK you are safe from fraud, at least in the long term as a copy of each cheque issued is kept my the issuing bank. Therefore if someone wrote a cheque from your chequebook or indeed made a forgery, the cheque would eventually return to your Branch.

If you didn't issue the cheque, you would then contact your bank and if the signature did not match, the bank would then most likely reimburse you.

Don't be silly -- don't you think criminals also have Photoshop & a (photo-realistic) Printer ??

Check out 419 Advanced Fee fraud - Cheque Chasing scams ..

NB. It has been suggested that one reason why Nigerian Bank Cheques are initially 'creditted' by UK Banks is that they are 100% genuine ..
The 419 Fraudster either has a mate in the Bank of Nigeria, or bribes a Bank official, to 'stop' the cheque and claim it's 'fake' AFTER the Cheque has been physically returned by the UK Bank months later ... (no one can prove otherwise as (of course) they no longer have the evidence)
