I have tried to unload and reload the router, tried to get help from the india support people for an hour and all they told me was to shut down and reboot. I have seen on other answers where people have said to buy an amplifier but it is only two rooms away from the router.

Before adding an amp or moving etc. Have you tried another channel? There are 11 channels available in the US and every router manufacturer out there seems to use 6 or 11 as the default. That causes interference and short ranges if you neighbor is using the same one! So before too much work, try using another channel to see what happens. Just log in to the router and change it up or down. You may want to try several to find the best one for your location.

If that doesn't help and your router has removeable antennas you can also just add a higher gain antenna - in many cases has better effect than an amplifier because it increases receive range as well as transmit range.

It is not the distance, it is the density of the walls.
If the computer gets a signal closer then it is not a problem with the router, i would recommend yes either an amplifier, moving the router to a new location, or moving closer to the router.

Try another location for the router, something may be shielding it from your computer. Ground wires can affect reception, and just moving it a couple feet may solve the problem. If anything close by has a grounding effect, it will degrade your reception.
The phones output may be stronger than you computers, and if you don't wish to move it, try returning it for another model, it may be defective even though the cell phone can access it.

sometimes wireless can be annoying
my computer doesnt get any wireless signals when its not plugged in to the power cord
and sometimes i have the same problem.. my comp will get signal from my neighbors but not mine
its just the way your comp is.. sometimes the wireless signal is really weak in some spots.
or maybe you just bought a bad router.. or your wireless card inside is weak
maybe you should bring it to where u got it and ask them.. never call those help lines! they are NO help!
