After listening to his testimony and comments from troops on the ground, there seems to be a glimmer of hope to a secure conclusion to the strife in Iraq.
The U.S. counter insurgency methods seem to be having a positive effect in the region. Does his timeline for the draw down of troops seem reasonable?
Of course the million dollar question is: Will the Iraqi government get their act together during that time?

Not only did he give a reasonable assessment he let the American people know that we can and will complete our mission in Iraq, Democrats cringed at this assessment and Moveon.org took a slap in the face, The American People are not ready to lose this war for the sake of politicians or for the advancement of loons like moveon.org. I have faith in the American People to see through the political garbage going on in DC and to make the right decision to win this war in Iraq and the many more that will follow because the Jihadist will never stop trying to kill us or convert us.

The "surge" would logically work to quell violence in a small region if it was flooded with troops to provide extra security. If those areas are able to maintain that security after the troops leave remains to be seen. I do not believe General Petraeus nor do I believe any of Bush's "yes men" they will say whatever they have to. The Iraqi government will never get it together and protect their country until they are forced to.

Also Petraeus is the man who didn't have the forsight to keep track of US weapons that were given out to the Iraqi police force and military. Those same weapons are most likely now being used against our troops now. I have a hard time believing someone who couldn't do something as simple as track the weapons given to what precinct by the serial number on them.

Yes, he gave a reasonable assessment.

He basically said that we reduce violence in Iraq with about 170,000 american troops.

If we want to bring those troops home however, the Iraqi government has to start functioning like a government. That's beyond his control.

The Democrats said: 'What can you tell us Patraeus/Crocker that would lead us to believe the Iraqis will have a fully functional government six months from now?'.

SIX FREAKIN' MONTHS?

I have a few questions for the US congress!

Social Security reform? When?

Border control? When?

A resolution to the lingering abortion rights issue? When?

Campaign Finance reform? When?

Tax code reform? When?

Higher education act? When?

Transportation security bill? When?

Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act? When?

Immigration reform? When?

SCHIP? When?

THE LIST IS ENDLESS!!!!!!!

That the US congress, in an atmosphere of near total security, can not deal with these basic, front-line issues says they have absolutely no ground to stand on in demanding that Iraq, a country that has endured, several wars, starvation, beatings, rapes, discrimination, torture, murder and a host of other atrocities over the course of several decades, suddenly whip together an entire government in a six month time period.
It is the epitome of arrogance.
WHO DO THESE DING-A-LINGS THINK THEY ARE???!!!

How can anyone who is not involved in the military have any reasonable intelligent opinion of what Gen. Petreaus has to say?!? Nobody who is not involved in the war in Iraq, either planning, executing, monitoring, etc. has a clue what the military situation is on the ground.
Every single answer that claims Gen. Petreaus lied, he has no credibility, he "betrayed us" are all bullshit! You people have no clue what's going on in Iraq and you only want to discredit the president because he a Republican. You call a man a liar, yet you have no possible way to back up what you say! You are so transparent and so fake that your hatred is oozing from you. Even through this electronic forum, it is easy to see that you are filled with hate.
Offer some evidence that Gen Petreaus lied to you. Tell us what he said that was not true and tell us what the truth really is.

It is the million dollar question, and, I'm afraid the answer is Iraq is not capable of forming a political alliance to shore up stability in their own country. We are waiting for a positive outcome that depends upon other people, another nation, to determine. This is unwise considering our military is tied up, apparently, until such a goal is met. This is a fool's errand.

They're only proposing to bring back the troops to pre-surge level some time by the end of next year. Meanwhile, Iraqi civilians and U.S. servicemen keep dying at the same rate. This is only an exercise in politics, just in time for elections.

Cakewalk
Mission accomplished
It just shows the insurgents are getting desperate.
We've never been stay the course

Sounds familiar?

Militarily we're winning.
The political question will take time but it's coming along.
It took our forefathers about 10 years to hash out a workable constitution.
The politicos in DC need to get out of the way and stop trying to force their will on Iraq.

Your million dollar question is the same one that I have. I fear that they won't. I keep reminding myself that we took over a country that lived under dictatorship for many decades and also how long it took the U.S. to eventually form the democracy that we are today.

As far as General Petraeus's report goes, it did give me a glimmer of hope and I believe that his time line is reasonable.
