Yes i know its a weird question, but recently ive been craving soil, and ive been sucking on stones ive picked from the garden and making unconspicuous holes in walls in my house to eat wall plaster. How can I control myself eating soil? I know eating soil is quite dangerous as there could be cat faeces in the soil and cause toxoplasmosis - can anyone help? My cravings have been VERY strong.

I just wanted to let you know your not the only one with such cravings. I'm 33wks pregnant and I crave the smell of damp plaster/mud. Every time I walk past a building site or some ones house I sniff as hard as possible and dream about eating the plaster although I haven't tasted any yet! I also noticed I love the smell of paper..we have a filing room with years old documents and I always open and close the door so I can absorb the smell.

If he's eating chalk he may need calcium. Maybe suggest he take a calcium supplement? The chalk itself is probably harmless in small amounts. It's just limestone and it's actually used in toothpaste. The compulsion to eat non-edible things is called pica. More on that and specifically earth or chalk eating below - including possible dangers, as well as benefits.

Obviously your body is telling you it needs something that it is missing. I've heard that some populations from the southern US actually eat clay as part of their diet. This is likely due to a nutritional lacking of minerals (say iron for example). You should be taking mega vitamins during your pregnancy anyway, but if not, try doing that. Maybe load up on a little extra iron and talk to your doctor about it.

Jeesus lady.

You're pregnant right...? Cuz im just grasping at threads here.

How bout you make urself a nice chocolate cake once in a while and crush it all in a pan and THEN eat it.

Relax, just eat some other stuff. I mean, you could eat grilled peppers - and eat the peeling plaster like skin.

see, I AM grasping at threads.

Good luck hungry lady!

Whatever you do, dont eat liver as suggested earlier. you should completety avoid liver and any liver products. Liver contains very high levels of the retinol form of Vitamin A, which can be harmful to your developing baby.
Speak to your gp or midwife about pica and they will be able to help you.

Consuming soil is regarded by the American Dietetic Association (ADA) as a phychobehavioral disorder that involves abnormal craving for, and ingestion of nonfood substances such as clay, starch, or chalk. The ADA expressed concern that such nonfood items might displace nutritious food and might be harmful

Such an assessment by health professionals may be misguided. Cravings for soil substances such as clay or chalk actually may reflect mineral deficiencies, and the individual's intuitive attempt to correct them. The practice is known as geophagia.

Soil eating was first associated with a deficiency disease of the blood as early as 1821. The disease is called chlorosis, or "green sickness" due to skin pallor. It is a form of anemia that affects adolescent girls. Chlorosis is also known as a deficiency disease in plants, characterized by yellowing of leaves. The disease, in both cases, is caused by a lack of available iron, zinc, or other minerals in the diet of humans; and in the soil, with plants. Soil eating was an attempt to obtain the needed minerals.

well... as delicious as I can imagine soil and wall plaster tasting, I'm going to have to advise you to stick to eating things that are edible. Whenever I have a sudden draino craving or when I get the munchies for raw sewage and batteries... I think to myself, "this is probably not good for me." Instead I will reach for something that is delicious.... and nutritious.... like spinach, which tastes like raw sewage and batteries anyway.

So basically, instead of eating weird ****, eat normal food instead. If you really like the taste of dirt and cat feces, go to a vegan restaurant. Vegetarian cuisine tastes pretty much exactly like dirt (with or without the cat feces based on what dish you order) and is apparently good for you (even though most vegans look like cancer patients.)

Good luck to you and your quest to regain sanity!

they make an edible soil for pregnant women. I don't know what it's called or where you get it. I tried googling it but I couldn't find anything.

I think you have an eating disorder called pica or geophagy. I think it might be caused by iron deficiency cause the baby is hogging it all ♥
