I have been advised by a mothercare assistant to wear maternity bras from now on (I'm only 5 weeks preg) and that it is bad to wear underwired bras as it stops the production of the milk glands...the problem is..i have hard nipples all the time (even before pregnancy) and so wearing a non-underwired, non-padded bra is quite embarassing as you can see my nipples through all of my tops...any advice?

try using some nursing pads. The disposable ones designed to keep milk leaking through your shirt. They might help disguise your nipples.

I've not heard that theory before. When I was in my fifth month, I bought two nursing bras from Motherhood Maternity. They're padded enough to prevent nipple poking and they're rounded enough to make me look funky, and they're underwires. I went from a C to an E thus far (my baby is due soon and I might grow a bit more when my milk starts to come in). Fortunately, I'm six feet tall and even though I've only gained 35 pounds, It doesn't seem as though they don't look too disproportioned.

There's no science behind the silly myth of a properly-fitting underwire bra hindering milk gland production. The mothercare assistant probably means well, but you can get whatever bra supports you comfortably while concealing your "happy" nipples.

Don't buy too many of one size--if you're like some moms-to-be, your breasts will grow and grow and grow until college boys can't help remarking, then stumble onto something about how healthy you look.

i wore underwire bras during my whole pregnancy and i certainly didn't have any problem producing milk. i was well endowed before i got pregnant and with the milk production, they felt like they were going to bounce off my knees without the extra support. i tried regular bras and it just didn't do it for me. i saw no reason in buying the maternity bras because they were pricey and i didn't have any intention on breastfeeding.

if you really think that you need a non-wired bra, they do make those with padding. if you can't find one, put nursing pads in your bra.

Hi,

Marks and Spencer sell those briliant maternity bras that are slightly padded.

They come in black & white.

I am 39 weeks pregnant and went from a 32B to a 38D, had to change bra size 4 times !!

Even though you don't need to use them now you could try wearing the fabric breast pads inside your bra to prevent your protruding nipples being so noticeable on the outside of your clothing.

Pregnant breast tissue can be damaged very easily so they do recommend you wear bras with out under wire to help minimise any damage. Maybe you could get some reusable breast pads and put them in your bra to help cover up your nipples, they are quite squishy and comfortable.
Hope that helps.
