For exact definition go to a dictionary or enciclopedia. My definition: a notable object (God or man made) ussefull to draw it at a map to mark directions:
When you reach Harvard University turn right and continue 5 blocks, turn left and the house is the one in front of the large and old oak tree.
Harvard University and the old oak tree are landmarks.
