If you have watched TV programmes of expeditions, journeys, etc., you would have seen that the Toyotas are the most frequently used, and they are often the ones that are used to drag the other 4x4s (e.g. Land Rovers) out of trouble.

Murphy's law: The better the 4-wheel-drive, the further away from civilization you'll be when you get stuck.

American made trucks are pretty well built (which is a lot more than I can say about their cars). Jeep vehicles (Daimler-Chrysler) are legendary in their off-road prowess. Just be sure to change the oil every 3 months / 3000 miles (5000 km). Waiting until 5000 miles (8000 km) or more makes the engine more prone to sludging up.

Hummer (General Motors) makes some very off-road capable SUV's also.

European and Japanese SUV's are also quite the athletes, but choose wisely. Land Rover vehicles are quite formidable in their off-road abilities. However, I have heard (don't know if it is true or not) that some of the newer ones are not as reliable as the older ones. Land Rover is now owned by Ford - What can I say?

The Toyota Land Cruiser has also been known to devour terrain like nobody's business. And, Toyota has a legendary reputation for reliability and longevity.

Here are the catches:
¹ 4×4 Trucks and SUV's are much more prone to roll over than cars are. Drive carefully, especially on curves, corners, and when evasive maneuvers are necessary.
² Smaller SUV's (like a Suzuki Vitara or Sidekick, Honda CRV, etc.) have smaller, less thirsty engines, but may also lack torque, horsepower, and a low-range transfer case for serious off-roading. However, they may be able to fit through tight spots larger SUV's and trucks can't.
³ Larger SUV's (like a Hummer H1 [8 ft. (2.6m) wide], Toyota Landcruiser) pack a powerful engine, but at the cost of both fuel economy and ability to fit through small spaces.

Research the area you'll be going and use this information to help determine if you need a small, medium, or large sized SUV or truck. Some mid-sized SUV's and trucks come with a full-sized engine (V8) as an option. For best off-road prowess and fuel economy, try to get something with a diesel engine, a low-range transfer case, locking differentials, a good winch, and at least 1 full-sized spare tire (2 or more may be better for long trips). A weather-resistant GPS system, 2-way radio, towing straps (to protect tree bark), towing chains, first-aid kit, air compressor, extra tank of fuel, and tire repair kit are also recommended.

If you haven't driven off-road before, I seriously recommend an off-road driving class. Hill climbing, hill descent, mud-bogging, rock-crawling, etc. all require special skill to avoid getting stuck, damaging the vehicle, getting injured, or worse. There is only so much the vehicle can do. A lot is riding in the hands of the driver.

Tread Lightly, pray to Jehovah (Yahweh), and use that uncommon thing called common sense.

The Land cruiser is the most suitable 4wd for adverse road conditions. The energy consumption of ±13/117mpg is a killer thou. The 92 VXR is the best in the series.

My first choice would be the Shogun, followed by the Landcruiser. Don't touch a Landrover, absolute bag of nails, half shafts break, badly built. HM Forces did a report about 10 years ago, and chose the Pinzgauer, and slated the Landrover as being prone to failure with drive shafts, engine, suspension and poor build quality. Because its a British make, quess what they ended up with. Yep the landrover.

without a shadow of a doubt, Toyota Landcruiser. Followed by the Nissan Safari, then the Landrover 180.

It`s got to be either a Landcruiser or a Nissan patrol, there really is no other choice !
I`ve got a Cherokee ( a proper one, not that new pretend thing !) but I`d change it for one of the 2 mentioned if I was going "Bush"
