I always hear about how brave the police and fire fighters were. Don't get me wrong they totally desevre it! But so do the 12 EMT's. These 12 EMT's ran to ground zero to start treating people and doing triage. These 12 EMT's are heros as well! I think it's time we start treating EMT's like the hero's they are.

There were 12 EMT's who died not counting the firefighters.

The EMTs are grouped in with the firefighters in most people's minds; indeed, in NYC, many (most?) EMTs are with the FDNY.

Actually I don't know the exact number of EMT's the responded that day, but I am positive that there were alot more than 12 of them. Most EMTs are part of the FDNY. However, yes there are private EMTs that work for the area hospitals. Everyone that responded that day has been reconized for their strength's, courage and sacrafices. You may not hear it in other areas ( I am from NYC), but we memorialize everyone that day, not just the Port Authority, FDNY and NYPD.

As has always been true of the military, on 9/11 "All gave some, and some gave all"--including the 12 paramedics you mention.

I guess people tend to focus on the police and firefighters because of the sheer visibility of their presence at the WTC--and this is meant in no way to minimize the heroism displayed that day by ordinary men and women thrust into an extraordinary situation.

Personally, I categorize emergency workers--police, firefighters, and paramedics--in the same slot as our men and women who serve in the military. They're on the front lines, too, as defense against our enemies, be they foreign or domestic.

God bless and preserve each and every one of them.
