You say you went to see your gp. Why did you not return to your OB doctor for your 6 week post natal checkup? This is extremely important. You may still have a piece of the placenta inside. If this is the case, you will need medical attention. If your bleeding still hasn't stopped by end of 7th week, see an Obstetrician.

Postpartum Bleeding After 6 Weeks

It really depends on the amount and color of your discharge. If it is old blood (brownish in color)with occasional reddish tint, you uterus is still dumping. But if its reddish all the time, you should go back to the Dr. Another thing, are you breastfeeding? That will cause the uterus to contract due to hormones still fluctuating.
Also, is this your first? You don't know what your norm is if it is. If not, consecutive births will increase cramping and bleeding because the uterus is more stretched than the last and will require more time to return to normal.
Are you overdoing it? When you see red blood have you exercised, ran the sweeper, went shopping and carried the groceries in? Do you see a pattern of strenuous activity and increase in flow? Have your mate help more. Are you more tired than normal? If you are actively bleeding, increase your iron intake.
Best advice - SLEEP WHEN THE BABY DOES if possible. Your body will tell you when your doing too much and I suspect that you are.
If you are still bleeding (red) after week 6, go back to the Dr. You might still have some left overs that your body can't expel on it's own. I had to have a d&c after the birth of my last and it was no big deal. I woke up feeling like a new woman and ready and rearing to go. Remember that your baby needs a healthy and happy mamma. Good luck!

Still Bleeding 6 Weeks Postpartum

Do not worry at all! This is all perfectly normal by all means and your dr. is exactly right! Unless you are bleeding heavy enough that you have to change your pad every 1-2 hours you are just fine. If you are sure that you are having your menstural cycle now then you are probably well on your way to being back on track with your cycle. You are actually lucky that you only bled for 6 weeks in my opinion. I spotted while I nursed for 8 weeks then when I stopped nursing I had a moderate flow for 2 more months which was all normal but way aggrivating causing bladder infections and UTI from having to wear a pad for so long. My daughter was born May 10th so Iknow exactly how you feel! You are fine just aggrivated I am sure. Congrats on the new baby! Hopefully you will get back on track now that you are having your period. Best of Luck!

I bled for 4 weeks with my daughter and about 2 with my son, If you are concerned then get a second opinion, but from what I can remember from antenatal classes the midwife did say you can bleed up to 6 weeks and some women bleed up to 8. It's not pleasant but hopefully it will settle down soon, just make sure you don't over exert yourself, or lift things where you have to strain to much, it Can make you bleed bright red blood. Where the placenta was attached and then detached left a wound which has to heal.
Good luck.

after my first child I was still bleeding 3 months later, and each time I went in to get it checked, they told me everything was fine, and normal, than one day it just stopped...Not everything settles down for everyone after 6 weeks...some womens bodies take longer, but I would definatly go back and get re-checked in a week if the bleeding hasn't stopped yet.
