You're referring to eclampsia and pre-eclampsia. Refers to extremely dangerous blood pressure levels in pregnancy and childbirth. Tell your friend to be sure she keeps all pre-natal doctor's appointments, and to follow her dr's instructions.

Pre-eclampsia is pretty serious. My mom had it and there's a chance I might develop it so I studied up a bit. As for what it is, your blood pressure shoots up, you start to have major swelling, you might get dizzy and see a lot of stars, and sometimes there's some stomach pain involved. The only cure for pre-eclampsia is delivery so they're probably going to induce her or opt for a c-section. Either way, as long as they're taking care of it your friend should be fine. If she's had it for a long time, though, it could turn into Eclampsia which is associated with having seizures and some other serious problems. As for why women get it, there's no sure fire answer. A lot of people believe it's genetic, but it's also more common in first time mothers.

do you mean pre-eclampsia hum loads of woman get it and don't die from it
I'm living proof i had it with my first baby now 10 years on I'm still here
in rare cases you can die from that's why you have regular check ups and if your friend has it then I'm sure she will be fine she will probably be induced as soon as they can do it they is no reason why some women get and some don't i just know that its rare to cause death
