First i can say that you should get books like super system, or Phil Gordon's little blue, and green books. These books will give you the basics of the game, but if you want to learn how to play poker you should get out to the tables. Books can only help you so much, i feel in order to get good at the game, you need to play the game. There are just so many different situations that you will run into, that no book can cover them all. Plus the fact that most books cover how to play big hands, but do not go into detail on the hands that really matter. It's hands like K-9, Q-J, A-9, and 8-9 suited that will make or break you anyways. So please by all means buy books and read them, but there is no substitute for good poker.

I'll just tell you that experience is the best teacher. Sure it's good to read lots of books. But can you go to a real card room and play low limit hold'em? That is the best way to learn. On the WPT it's always six-handed. That is SO different than 9-10-handed. In early position you play only Aces, Kings, Queens, AK, or AQ suited. That means small blind, big blind, then first position. You want to be in last position (on the button,) because after the flop you can see what all the action was. The fewer people at the table, you loosen up a notch. I think you should start off with a book about position. Doyle Brunson's "Super System" is a big, expensive book, but really has just about all your FAQ answered. Btw, if you didn't know, the 2007 WSOP is on ESPN every Tuesday at 5-7pm or 8-10pm, depending where you live. They started with almost 7,000 and are down to about 300. Now is a good time to start watching. They are playing 9-handed, so you'll see players in early position throwing away hands like KQ off-suit, which is the correct play, while 3-handed it would be a raising hand. I hope that cleared up the "position" thing for you a little, but I'm sure that Brunson explains it a lot better!! That's the book. Good luck!! :) This turned out to be a very interesting question! A star for you, my friend!!

The first books I read when I started playing were Phil Gordon's "Little Green Book", he also has two others, you can get all three in a box set, and "Poker: The Real Deal". Those are great to teach you simple tells, how to bluff, learning playing patterns, and reading.
After feeling comfortable with the game and play, read David Sklansky's "The Theory of Poker"! This is a fantastic book!! Another great one is "Ace on the River" by Barry Greenstein and Doyle Brunson (this one is more advanced).
I would NOT recommend Phil Helmuth's "Play Poker Like the Pros"!

I suggest you: Dan Harrington's books, Phil Gordon's books, Daniel Negreanu's book, David Skanlsky's Books, Johnny Chan's book.
Only because you ask for Texas Holdem. If you would have need a book about several form of poker that would be Doyle's Brunson books.

There are so many good ones out. For a begginner, the McEvoy/Cloutier books are good. For tournaments, Harrington on Hold em 1, 2 and 3. For cash games, no one stands out to me. I would also agree that u must play as many hands as possible to get better. Starting out in small-entry fee single table tourneys is probably the most bang for your buck. Read, study, watch poker, discuss it, and play a lot.

i highly recommend doyle brunson's supersystem (both one and two). they're a highly involved "how to" on everything from little hands to big hands and not only does it tell you how, it also explains "why". i thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and learned some valuable tricks and techniques.
hope this helps...
