On any vehicle made from 1996 you have two oxygen sensors, one before and one after the catalytic converter, if you take the cat off your check engine light will remain on all the time. In terms of performance there is no reason to remove the cat as new ones are made of a honeycomb type matrix with virtually no restriction. Early moder catalysts had small granules and these were restrictive and prone to plugging.

What country are you in, what car is it?

Removing the catalyst won't hurt the engine - but will effect your emissions which will cause you problems at MOT time (depending on what country you live in)

If you remove the Llambda sensors (oxygen sensors) form the exhaust system (which might be attached to the same section of pipe as the cat) your engine will not run aswell because the ECU needs the information from the sensor to calculate the correct fueling.

Also - if you are in the UK, if your car is later than a '92 you are not legally allowed to remove the cat - however if your car is older than this, you can remove it no problems - as long as you still pass the emission check at MOT time.

Yes removing the cat converter will cause problems, first it will throw codes in the computer and it is there to limit the hydrocarbons the engine produces, so with out the converter the car will not pass emissions. What I do is replace the converter with a high flow converter.

Unless you have an emissions test in your area, then you'll be OK. It is illegal to remove it, but you knew that. They used to make a test pipe that would replace the converter, I guess they still do.

good luck.

as long as you replaced the cat with exhaust pipe, so it wont deafen you, removing the cat will actually improve gas mileage and you'll gain 4-6 hp. most inspection or emission laws dont like it though.

It is illegal in some states to remove it. It will not hurt anything, it will make the vehicle louder.
