It varies a lot from one Magazine to another. I sometimes sell articles or short stories, I make between sixty and a couple of hundred quid. For example, I did a 300 word piece for an Astronomy magazine, on Meteors, and got 75 quid. I wrote a story for People's Friend (yes, sorry!) and got 150. If you write to the magazine they will send submission guidelines and payment policies.

I've written more then several articles for magazines, some short stories. Don't feel put down but, they don't really pay that well, some not at all but accept "contributions" but, it's a place to get started.
Some pay as little as ten cents a word and, only accept stories of 300 words or less, some five hundred. Not much to start with at least.
Many journalists have more then a few editors they keep in contact with, this is no way to make money if that's what your after and, it's hard work. I do it as a hobby and entrainment.
Start with newspaper editorials about common everyday happenings.

This depends on the magazine you're writing for, the market you're in (i.e. the UK or US) and lastly how much experience you have.
Here is a link to the National Union of Journalists freelance fees guide (for UK journalists but I think the advice is applicable to those in the US also): http://www.londonfreelance.org/feesguide/index.html
Typically if a magazine has a hefty circulation and is a 'big' national or international title such as Cosmopolitan or Glamour you will be compensated pretty well. The down side is if you're not an established freelancer you will find it pretty tough to get published in the magazine.
And the likelihood is that you won't be paid for your first commission.

That depends on how long you work there. When it's a first -thirtiest article I'd see the fact that they print it as salary.
You could ofcourse send in articles and... write a application.
Don't get discouraged when it takes a while...
