In addition to Daughter's answer which I agree with, Silver Ravenwolf also is a very angry person with a grudge against Christianity. While I understand and share her frustration, pushing away from one thing does not necessarily guide one to the most appropriate spiritual path.

Anger is useful for self-protection or to right a wrong or to spur one into action, but it makes a poor guiding light. One should study a spiritual path because it speaks to them, not out of simple rebellion against something else. There are many ways to go for this besides Wicca.

Silver Ravenwolf has not truly found peace in herself, therefore I would be cautious in accepting her guidance.

Silver Ravenwolf is NOT what Wicca is about. It's commercial, encourages kids to lie to thier parents about thier practices, and teaches nonsense. Wicca is NOT about magic, it is a RELIGION.
Read Scott Cunningham. He's is much better and still faithful to actual Wicca.
Please, in the name of Odin, do NOT start with her.

I say this and I have heard from every Wiccan High Priestess I know.

lots of excellent solutions already, Phoenix rather lots nailed it and provided an magnificent record of hyperlinks that furnish you with a superb run down of what precisely is incorrect with Ravenwolf's books. enable me positioned it this form, Silver Ravenwolf's books have been the 1st one's to get pulled off my bookshelf and filed interior the returned of my closet while i began out to expire of area. and that i think of her incompetence could be summed up by some thing she says in To experience a Silver Broomstick. In her dialogue of kit while she says: "The athame represents mind, i do no longer use mine lots." There are different authors purely as undesirable as Silver - undesirable history, undesirable good judgment, questionable ethics, a prefer to water each thing right down to meaninglessness.... she's purely extra prolific than maximum which attracts lots of ire from those persons who're extreme approximately our faith and don't choose for to work out it misrepresented.

Silver Ravenwolf has a serious lack of ethics in her books and lies. Her books are full of bad history and bad advice...like, for instance, she encourages her teen readers to lie to their parents about the fact that they practice Wicca. She also takes every opportunity to bash Christianity and other non-Pagan religions and focuses more on the magic aspects than the spiritual aspects of Wicca.

http://wicca.timerift.net has an essay on her that elaborates a bit more.

Well I don't say not to read her books because I believe that all books may be helpful at times. However I will say her books aren't the most indepth. I enjoyd reading her books that I have and she gave me the feeling I could do things when I thought it was too much. That was early on my path.

I just think there are better books out there. Hey but as always read the books that speak to you. :-)

People think she's a bit of a sellout, which may be true, or not. Personally for the beginner witch, I always reccomend To Ride a Silver Broomstick. Her other books arent much more than retellings and elaborations of her first book. She writes well though

She teaches teens to lie to their parents is my first objection.

Her knowledge of history is attrocious.
She's a hypocrite
She teaches that Wiccans live more fulfilling lives than what she calls the "once-borns."
Her knowledge of Wicca is rudimentary
She focuses on making Wicca look cool, hip and easily accessable instead of stressing actual work and thought being involved.
She churns out spellbooks and and encourages readers to think that's all you need to practice magic

My more complete objections are here:

There's also links to several other people's reviews of her there.

I have no objection to her material per se, but how does she expect to be taken seriously with such a "porn star" name!

People take Caitlin Matthews seriously- I wonder why :)

Petty squabbles mostly. Also she doesn't give the names of some of her sources - people don't like the fact that she held true to her promises to keep certain people's identity out of the media for their own personal reasons. To me that shows integrity that she held true to her word even when she was bashed for it. Her books are great for beginners because they are easy to understand, but years later you may want to re-read them to find more subtle information. And, yes, it was contractual obligations. Her publishing company only wants simple "how-to" books. But I've read Teen Witch and didn't find it to be anything terrible - it does focus a bit more on simple spell work because that's what the younger generation is interested in. But it does discuss basic ethics (3 fold law etc). Read them for yourself and form your own opinion. I would never recommend reading books by just one author because they all have a different perspective and even the "worst" of them have something of value to offer.
