My top picks would immediately be a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic, and if you're on the taller side, move up to a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry. Also, for a great deal, check out the Chevy Prizm. The pricetag screams American car, but the car itself is a Toyota Corolla with Chevy badges. The dealerships can't sell it for as much as a Toyota, but you'll get the same quality for alot less money. They made them from 1998-2001 and they're not bad looking and have a four cylinder that gets decent gas mileage. As I said in my other responses, just be sure to pick something that you like at least a little. Reliability is important for your first car, something that I didn't consider when I bought mine, but I had a lot of fun with it, and I hope you'll do the same. My first car was a 1995 Chrysler New Yorker - she was a boat, but very comfortable for a tall teenager (I'm 6'4") and she had all the bells and whistles. Lots of good times in that car, but horrible gas mileage (About 16 miles to the gallon - LOL. ) Recently replaced it with a 2002 Toyota Solara, fantastic car, but a little out of your price range.

The Australians used to talk about their Ute but it was slang for any pickup and meant Utility Vehicle.
