Old b and w films are more soppy because of the culture and the crackly sound-quality, and especially because women had a more "wifelike" role then. I mean that b and w films are also more soporific and washy, which is why a film like "Gone with the Wind" with the rabbitish Clark Gable can suddenly crop-up and astound the whole western world.

Doctor Zhivago.

'My Life' starring Micheal Keaton, a guy who's diagnosed with terminal cancer starts a video diary for his unborn child and tries to leave him all the teachings and advice that he wont be there for. On the way he tries to put right all the loose ends in his life and reconcile his relationship with his father. My wife was eight months pregnant when we watched it and I cried for most of the second half. Never felt so in touch with a film since that one.
