The helmets basically kept their heads warm. On a long flight--even a one-way flight--that was important.
It also gave them a place to attach their goggles. The helmets offered no protection against bullets or impact. They were fleece-lined leather.

Not all of them did. Some of them wore them for radio communications (speakers built in as ear pieces). Most wore the bandana thing that was meant to symbolize something. I seen a site similar to the one you are copying your questions from that actually gave intelligent answers to them. It was pretty cool, you should check it out.
