First of all you will need a good map of Athens, which you can have at tourist info at the airport for free or at your hotels reception. Then you will need a pair of comfortable shoes and your camera.
The weather is still hot, so I will advise you to start early morning with visiting Acropolis (http://www.chem.uoa.gr/Location/athensmap/AM_Parthenon.htm
, walk down the slope to Thission http://www.chem.uoa.gr/Location/athensmap/AM_Thission.htm
and you will come to Monastiraki
http://www.chem.uoa.gr/Location/athensmap/AM_Monastiraki.htm
If you still have time after having a break at one of many coffee shops there and tasting "dikano" - kebab in Greek pita bread, you can walk back thru Ermou str. to Sintagma square http://www.chem.uoa.gr/Location/athensmap/AM_Sintagma.htm
In the evening you can visit Plaka ( old neighborhood) http://www.chem.uoa.gr/Location/athensmap/AM_Plaka.htm and have a glimpse of night in old Athens
Next day you can go by cable car to Lecabettus hill and enjoy the view of Athens http://www.chem.uoa.gr/Location/athensmap/AM_Lecabettus.htm
It is a long walk down, I prefer to go by cable car again.
Near is Kolonaki http://www.greeka.com/attica/athens/athens-neighbourhoods/athens-kolonaki.htm with a lot of fashion coffee shops and expensive shops
In the evening I am sure you would like to come back to the old town, where you can have a nice dinner or visit some clubs or open cinema.
Next day ( time flyes in Athens!) you will have time to visit Kallimarmaro stadium http://www.chem.uoa.gr/Location/athensmap/AM_Stadium.htm and at least a few of the museums.
Wow, I want to go to Athens now.....Have a nice stay in Greece, take many photos and come back again!

Day 1. You visit the Acropolis in the morning. Then go down into the area of Plaka and have lunch somewhere there. After you rest a little bit at the tavern or in a cafe, continue your walk in Plaka (make sure to visit the Byzantine churches of Gorgoepikoos, Kapnikarea, and others) and end up at Thiseio in the afternoon, where you will visit the ancient Agora and have dinner at "kouti", a nice small restaurant right outside the gate of teh ancient Agora on Adrianou street.
Day 2. Go to the Byzantine Museum, the Benaki museum and the Cycladic art museum. These are all nearby, at metro station Evangelismos. Then, go a bit uphill into the area of Kolonaki. It is a nice shopping area with expensive shops, but it is also a nice area to have a light lunch (perhaps on Milioni street). In the afternoon either visit one of the above museums, that you didn't have time for in the morning (check opening times and days too, the Benaki is open until late on Thursdays, so better do this on a Thursday), and then go up the Lycavettos hill with the funicular railway or by taxi, for a splendid evening view of Athens and a nice dinner at the cafe there.
Day 3. Visit the National Archaeological museum. Then I can leave you the day free, but I suggest you go by the sea, at Kalamaki (try "Kitchen bar", former Nraida, at Marina Alimou, a taxi driver will know where it is if you give him these instructions), or visit Keramikos or have a walk near the metro station Keramikos, an area with many trendy cafes-restaurants-bars.

Yes, there is plenty to see in Athens but what a mis-match in days. For people with two weeks I still advise them to spend less than 36 hours in Athens and the rest on the islands. It is a big city; you will tire rapidly so watch for people watching cafe's to rest. Also you did not say what month; that makes a big difference. Check the link below for festivals and celebrations. Cheers,

you have go to see the Parthenon, there is a long walk up to it and it's quite steep so wear comfortable shoes, and there is a fee to see it. when you are leaving the Parthenon don't leave the same way you came in, go down the back exit, down a path that goes down hill toward the town, it's interesting. then you are not far from the shopping area, and some good restaurants down town, it"s great. you can get some very nice gifts , for a reasonable price, especially coffee sets and statues. if you take a taxi be VERY careful they are CROOKS< ALL OF THEM. Make sure you ask how much it will cost BEFORE you get in the taxi. on my first trip to greece it cost me the aquivilant of $40 to go 2 miles. I learned the hard way . it's best to have your hotel order a taxi for you and still make sure you know how much it will cost you, there and back. most taxit drivers will come back for you if you tell them a time to meet you. also watch your self for pick pockets... Lots of them, keep tight hold of your money, you'll never see them coming they are so good at it. even children. other than that I LOVE Athens.
