I think this is making the house damp. If \I removed the tramac from around the walls and dug a shallow trench would this help remedy the damp problem?

depends ..you should have two course of bricks clear of the ground around your property ..a9 by 6 air brick usually fits in between these two course of bricks ..so the tarmac may not be too high ..your dpc is normally easy to find ..extra wide joint ..bottom of door cill sits on it .. but if it is too high then excavate 150mm wide .and go down 3 course below dpc ..then put pea gravel in trench to a depth to leave the two course up to dpc clear

blocked air bricks will cause damp. my place had plants growing around the bricks. Come autumn the plans died and got into the vents. Damp started to appear in the rooms. Dig a trench of sorts and keep the vents clear!
