I think for whatever reason that I can kind of see the issue from the side of a non-smoker and a smoker. I smoked for 7 years and now I see things differently.
When I am around my boss who smokes to the point of absurdity (almost lighting on cigarette off the next for about 3 packs a day) I see it looking just "needy" and sad.
I can't believe that he is carving years off of his life as he is barely 30 years old and already has that nice smokers raspy, cough going on.
I don't think it looks sophisticated or elegant for either sex to smoke.

A male friend of mine once said that he thought the sight of men smoking cigarettes made them look effeminate. He said that the way they hold the cigarettes between their fingers and putting those slim white cylinders to their lips make them look like they are sucking on something.

no unless ur a sexist or from a third world country where it's unusual for a woman to do same things as a guy.
lolz, i am a dude and smoking does not look cool on anyone.
i used to smoke and some girls liked me, seriously because they thought i was being a bad boy. i wasn't and it didn't feel good so i quit.

i dont think so, i think anyone who doesn't really smoke and is just trying to be "sophisticated and sexy" will look awkward

It is because you have a pre-determined bias towards men.
For me, I don't care who it is, I find anyone who smokes UGLY. I remember watching Nicole Kidman smoke on TV and have never been able to think of her as an attractive woman since....

Men who do dangerous things are attractive. The women who are attracted to them because of it then try to break them of their dangerous ways. Also applies to Motorcycles, and Extreme Sports.
