Typography is the art of typesetting, not a unit of measure. The pica is the typesetter's basic measure, and it's equal to 1/6 of an inch. There are 12 points to a pica, so the point is actually the smaller unit of measure.

Typography--art of setting type, and/or printing
Pica--12 point type, with 10 characters per linear inch
Elite--12 point type and 12 characters per linear inch (smaller of the 2 font sizes)
