First let me state, I DO NOT have an STD!
I went to the OBgyn last week (1st week Sept) for about the 5th time after complaining of severe cramping since February. In Oct of 2006 I had the Mirena IUD inserted for birth control and in May of 2007, I asked the OBgyn to remove it because of my cramping. He wasnt sure that was the source of my cramping (although he didnt look into it) and tried to give me painkillers first. Finally he removed it, because I told him that we were wanting to conceive. A month later I did conceive. Then I miscarried at 5 weeks. The doc gave me a clean bill of health but couldnt explain why I miscarried. My cramps since got worse and worse and by the end of August I was in extreme pain. It follows a pattern. A few days before I ovulate, it starts and then grows in intensity until my period starts when its intense, doubling over pain which makes me cry. My uterus throbs. It ebbs off then. When I last went to the OB, the nurse questioned me before the appt began

then wrote in my chart. It was a different doc, I thought I would have better more thorough results. The first thing he said when he walked in the room was "Ok so we will test you for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea"...before even examining me. I was completely horrified and insulted. After he insisted on that diagnosis, and me finally getting he was serious, I remarked that my marriage was completely fatihful, I had only had 2 sexual partners in my life and that I had undergone regular pap smears and testing since I was 17. I also explained about the IUD and the miscarriage. He seemed to listen to that, did a culture, and then a physical exam. But then he prescribed me Doxycycline and Flagyl. And said he wanted to see me when the results came back. I went home and looked it up and saw that those are commonly used to treat STD's mostly. I questioned him about what other kinds of infections it could be but he was evasive. When I called out of curiosity today to see if they had gotten the

results, the cultures had not even made it to the lab. I asked the nurse if he even tested for anything other than the STD's and she said no, that would require further testing and I should come back.

Im really insulted and even though I will keep taking the antibiotics cos I have no real idea what the hell is going on in my uterus, I wonder if I should be going to a county hospital or something where they would test for a whole spectrum of infections, instead of this really nice women's center that is obviously biased for some reason and not thorough?

Im also insulted that this nurse made the diagnosis and the doc went with it before he even laid eyes on me. Do I sound like im overreacting? I know this isnt an STD. But I feel like something else is probably being overlooked now. Would these antibiotics help me anyway?

Im so lost right now. This has been going on for like 8 months now.

To Sweeney: Ive asked 2 doctors for an ultrasound now and been refused both times. I was worried I might even have an ectopic pregnancy at one point after the miscarriage and they still refused.

Hi Sweeney:

This is not an HMO, Im on Blue Shield PPO and its a private woman's clinic at one of the best hospitals in town, fancy area. Both docs dismissed an ultrasound cos they said I didnt need it. They are taking a wait and see approach. Normally that would be fine with me because I used to study medicine and I see the value of watching the development of something, but this is my uterus and could be a serious infection. If its endometritis, chronic or acute, both could render me unable to have kids in some way. Vicodin, Tylenol and Ibuprofen (seperately) dont even take the edge off my pain. It was so bad today I couldnt even walk. So much for PPO's being better than an HMO.

Have you thought about changing doctors? Shouldn't he be also doing an ultrasound or MIR of your abdominal area. As for your question, yes its entirely possible.
p.s. are your doctors from the same HMO? if yes they might be insisting on the STD so they don't have to do more expensive tests.

Hi, what's the reason they gave you for refusing the ultrasound? it can detect cysts in your ovaries. and I agree with Gladys C, taking out the IUD might have aggravated the problem. also, to spa girl fertility doctors are more thorough in their examinations but whether a male or female doctor is concerned, as long as they listen and make the correct diagnosis and treat it correctly, then they are good doctors. And of all the fields in medicine OBGyn had the worst malpractice lawsuits in the US.

Make an appointment with someone else outside of the practice if it a group office and ask about
endometritis, an inflammation of the lining of the uterus
it really rare but could be caused by infection or sometimes IUDs. antibiotics are usually the treatment for that also, but it probably would be better suited to go somewhere else.
if you do speak to another MD approach them rather delicately dont put them in the middle of you and this other doctor ,just tell them you want to find out what happened.
good luck. --c

Get a new obgyn! He either isn't listening to you or her doesn't care about his patients.

I have recently discovered that the best obgyns are #1 women, & #2 fertility specialists. These woman know their stuff inside & out!!! I have had a problem for years & no one figured out what it was until I went to a specialist. She did a very thorough exam & now has me scheduled for a hystoscopy (SP) to find out for certain what she thinks is happening is really happening.
Doctors don't always know everything- keep questioning & searching for a doctor who will listen to you. Any pain like this is NOT normal. Something is wrong. Be tough, but kind in asking for help. Ask friends for recommendations to their doctors in helping you find the right one for you. You can easily have them do an orthoscopic surgery to look inside your uterus & see if there is a problem. You could have cysts that are causing problems. Don't stop until you get answers!
Good luck honey!

Sorry, however, as a nurse, I feel everybody, even people who find themselves fortunately married, must have STD checks performed at their annually examination. Fact is, you NEVER understand. You simply on no account understand. Even the happiest watching couples will also be suffering from infidelity (I might understand, I'm an infidelity couples counselor as good side time). So many humans are blind sided via it. It takes a couple of additional mins, however it is your wellbeing and safeguard, so it is valued at it. She simply can have that mentality. She would be concerned she has an STD from what she says, it would be on the grounds that she had an affair she does not wish you to understand approximately, or it would be on the grounds that she particularly believes that she must be wary- sure, even relating to you, and also you would even be untrue. Additionally, a few STDs can pass quite simply undetected for years! Really, I feel that you simply must go away her individual and personal gynecological industry to her by myself. If you may have a further intent to suspect her, then pass from there. Don't base it off her scientific documents, which don't seem to be your small business, by myself. I for my part get confirmed for STDs annually although my husband and I are fortunately married and although we're each one hundred% dedicated to being trustworthy and even though we have been each and every different's firsts. You evidently suspect her to start with, so are not making it approximately her scientific documents.

I would not only change doctors, I would change doctor offices too! They need to find out what is causing the pain because it's not normal! It seems as if the doctors in that place have a problem with women!! Try another hospital or clinic.

What's happening here is not normal. You should not be having such heavy duty pain when ovulating. Go back to that doc right away and get the proper diagnosis and treatment. Don't let him put you off. Change doctors if you have to.

i think you need to see another OB/GYN for another opinion. could be something got messed up in there when the doc put in the IUD and it just made it worse when he took it out. good luck and best wishes.

I had endometriosis when I was younger, and it took trips to many doctors to get the correct diagnosis. GET A SECOND OPINION< AND A THIRD IF NECSESSARY!
