i just got a kitchen center work small island cutting table from my neighboor. i allready sanded everything and apply wood finish im waiting untill tomorow for the clear finish. it has a small pocket inlay for the cutting table and i have the matching cutting table, i sanded it to remove my neighboors knife marks and clean it up.
i am wondering if i can use the wood finish and fast drying polyurethane in the cutting board. i am not sure if it its safe for food preparation because it contains LEAD.
i am using the brand "minwax"
1.Dark Chesnut
2. Fast drying Polyurethane.

Polyurethane is not recommended for objects that will come in contact with food.
Mineral oil is one method of making food safe finishes, but there are others. You can also look for "salad bowl" finishes, and there are one or two that are safe to use AFTER they have thoroughly dried.
Here are a few such finishes at Rockler (A good company to purchase from, but you can probably find similar products locally) - http://www.rockler.com/search_results.cfm?filter=food+safe+finish

With all due respect to you and any other answers DO NOT do anything to the WOOD other than what you have done. Just keep it clean after each use.
This kind of Q comes up often here, and I'm still amazed that people want to use a FINISH on any surface that comes in contact with food products.

If any finish or other coating you put in wood contains lead it is not safe for food preparation. In fact, there is no need to apply anything to the cutting table. Just keep in clean.

Don't Do It! It doesn't matter how long it's dried,it will still get into you food when you use your knife on it. And I can't believe that Minwax is making a product that contains Lead,I think Not. Anyway, what you need to use to finish it is,"Cutting Board Oil" also called butcherblock oil.It is made just for wooden spoons,Bowls, cutting boards, anything wooden that you use in the kitchen. And it's FDA Approved. Byee

any finish you use on wood will scratch and cut as soon as you use a knife across it.. best wood for cutting board is beech, very hard wood don't paint it with anything just wash it well with hot water after use, scrape with blade of sharp knife if necessary. don't clean in dishwasher. beech block will soak up too much water, and will take ages to dry and may warp.

if its not dry then its not safe
if its already dried then it should be fine as far as i know...
side note(most tables have wood finish on them, the average household eats on it everyday i think it would be safe)

Lead would definitely be BAD to mix with food.

Most of the best cutting boards and butcher blocks out there are made from hard maple, due to its tight grain.
