One way of doing that is to show your birth certificate or driver license if you have one.

the reason people do that is that they already have a mental image of you already, and associate the way you look with the people from their past and present experience. Things will be OK. Just realize that people can believe what they want to. But you really don't have to prove yourself to anyone. Just be yourself, and go with the flow. The hell with what people think. Good enough, yes?

There are a couple of things behind it. First of all, their exposure to Native Americans is through old cowboy movies, and so the information they have and what you are saying would seem to be completely incongruous to them. Imagine how you would feel if they told you that they were really Chinese! My guess is that you would doubt them too. They can't be blamed, and anger just doesn't seem like a reasonable response. Secondly, the fact is that many, many people do claim Native American heritage that they don't have. If all the people who claim to be descended from Indian princesses really were, the entire Native American population would have been made up of royalty. This is a case of too many people crying wolf. If too many people do lie, it is a reasonable assumption that you are too.

One of the things you can do is rather than throwing your heritage in their face in a way they reject, you can bring it up more gently. My guess, given that you are light and blue-eyed, is that you are not pure Native American on both sides of your family (I apologize if I am wrong about this), so rather than saying, "My heritage is Native American," you can say, "My grandmother on my mother's side was pure Cherokee," or whatever it was. That invites far less argument.
