Why do models have to be such a specific height? I mean there are people out there with the perfect build & body type who are absolutely gorgeous and want to model, but are totally shut down by everyone because they aren't over 5'9"! I know clothes look great on tall, ultra-skinny models, but what about the others? Couldn't there be a modeling devision for shorter people? Maybe for petite brands or something? I guess I want to know why models have to be such a specific height, how it came to be, and why us others who are "mini-models" can't model. I just doesn't seem fair. I've seen so many girls absolutely crushed when told "Oh, sorry honey- you aren't tall enough. Too bad." Are models in other countries around the world subject to such strict height guidelines? It just seems so wrong!

I'm sorry but you're pretty ignorant about modeling.
First of all, yes the standards are international.
There are MANY divisions of modeling, for all types of people who want to model, including petite. There's lingerie (curvy girls), hair, parts (like hands and feet, legs), commercial (like catalogs, the every day looking girls), glamour (the girls who have gorgeous faces), and more!
Designers like tall models who are thin so they can be hangers for clothes! Why be jealous of that?? It's only runway, there's more out there.

There are many kinds of models. You are describing runway models. There are also body part models (the hand with the diamond ring, the foot in a new brand of sandels), magazine models (like hot rod magazines), live models (such as those at game shows and car shows) and general jobs that require good looking people (Hooters, casinos). Many magazine models are short. Fergie from Black Eye Peas could walk under a side mirror of a low rider without bending over. Lindsey Lohan is very short and has also modeled even before she got famous.

The typical height that agencies look for is 5'7", mostly because anyone shorter won't fit into the clothes that the designers make for modeling agencies. Also they do occasionally do accept models on the shorter side, but only for print ads, never for runway because the current standard for runway is extremely tall and thin, but it changes all the time, that just happens to be to current trend. But yes, it can be a harsh industry.

It would truly depend on the type of modeling. hand models are often shorter while female clothing models are often much taller. in point of fact there would be no official minimum height and as for my personal preference shorter is better. The factor more likely to dictate eligibility for modeling would be body type and bmi.

Actually, that's only runway modeling. And it's 5'8" :) There are many other areas that need many different body types. Commercial, promontional, child, lingerie, bathing suit, jeans, hands, feet, there's even opportunities for people over 35! Think about magazines! Or in Target, those posters on the ceiling? All very unique people.
Also, in Italy, France, and other fashion centrals, things are probably harder :)
Good luck!

Plenty of girls who are pretty are average height... the point of being a model is that nobody looks like you. I mean, not an average person can be a size 0, 5'8 or taller, and have gorgeous, distinct features. That would make it too easy. Don't even attempt unless you are at least 5'8.

not at all. Models for catalogs can be any height. There are petite models, all kind of models actually. Runway models has to be tall to be seen better from afar.
Why, there are even models who are 50 years old! There is a niche for everybody.

i think in asia you can be a little shorter. or maybe fitness modeling so if you were really in shape theres that. then theres glamour modeling like playboy. you could do tv commercials or acting. but generally if your under 5'7" you cant model. (that includes catalogs "comercial" modeling) and if you are under 5'9" you cant do runway.
