Unlike the original 1978 version of Halloween this version spends a great deal of its story telling the background and showing us the upbringing and family life of Michael Meyers. It also shows his progression from little boy to the psychotic killer he becomes. Literally this entire movie is a story of just that. It doesn’t start to mirror the original, just a bit, until about the last 40 minutes. This did make the story seem a tad dragged out. The original was under an hour and a half. This one is 10 minutes shy of 2 hours. The movie started out intense and held my attention for a bit, but somewhere in the middle it got a little boring, and then of course picks back up toward the end. It was interesting to finally have some background insight into what made Michael what he is. Which made HIM a bit scarier; however the movie itself was not the least scary. The original, even to this day can make me feel spooked or even a little scared when I watch it. That music in the original was the most intense sounding music and had an effect on you while watching the movie. All that and more was missing in this one. The music was not scary which consequently made the movie seem less scary. There weren’t any JUMP scenes either. You can see those coming a mile away, but at least they help build a little tension, which this film could have used.

The acting is very corny by the actors playing the teenage characters. Even Malcolm McDowell had a little trouble pulling of Dr. Loomis. I was not at all convinced by his performance. Tyler Mane, who played the adult Meyers, was decent just walking around and being scary. However, the filmmakers did end up making Michael Myers a GIANT in this Halloween movie. I never remembered him being as huge as he was in this one. So in that perspective maybe Tyler Mane (a former wrestler) wasn’t the best choice to play him. I much preferred the stuntmen used in the previous Halloween movies. Meyers’ smaller stature and him being able to do what he can made the character much scarier. He’s almost inhumanly huge to move as fast as he was in this film. In closing I just want to say that I’ve heard reviews that said this Halloween topped the original or was on par with the original. I have to disagree. If you loved the original, after seeing this one you probably will not have changed your view. This new take on the story was only good for providing some background information and that’s all. The rest of the story was nowhere near as good as the original or Halloween: H20 which was, in my opinion the best one since the original 1978 version.
