I also like those cars, but it's mainly because they were some of the most styling cars on the road at a time that I was growing up. The Pontiac Grand Prix and Olds Cutlass were really nicely styled cars. They had good handling packages available and plenty of power in 73 and 74. There were some special collector interest models made - a couple of pace cars and the 50th anniversary Pontiac, and I especially like the Hurst/Olds 442 in that body style.

My first car was a 1976 LeMans Sport Coupe.
The only real criticism I had was the weight of the car, and the very low power for the displacement....my 350 was rated at 165 horsepower. However, the engine responded very well to modification, and was seriously fun to drive after it was rebuilt with a few performance parts. The car took everything I dished out, and survived my inept abilities as a new driver.
I still miss that car!

Mine was a 75 Monte Carlo triple black----interior, exterior and vinyl roof...had a 400 4 barrel small block, swivel buckets, power sunroof, rallye wheels and was a great cruiser....lots of power. Wish I had kept it also....only paid 800.00 for it from my brother, drove two years and sold for 800.00 to a friend. My favorite memory is when I drove some girls from my volleyball team to some bars on New Years Eve one year during a blizzard with the sunroof open and heater going full blast....we had so much fun and doing road trips too. Only bad point was the doors weighed like 600 pounds and tended to rust out on the bottom.
I liked the Pontiac Grand Prix as well---sharp looking.

My first car was grandma's '76 Caprice, I ran over a Honda in it when I was 17, 2nd best car I ever owned, the 1st being a '89 Caprice! Thinking back I wish I had taken better care of it and kept it. Mopar gets most of the attention for the mid-'70s, they made some decent cars but I agree, the GMs from then were the best made.

maximum GM 10 bolts had bolt-in axles on the outer bearing. despite if the axle broke, the wheel might proceed to exist. 12 bolt rears used C-clips on the top of the axle. in case you smash an axle, the wheel leaves the vehicle. So NHRA demands the eliminators, which will desire to be welded to the axle housing. The GM 8.5" 10 bolt is a physically powerful one, stable for 500 HP in a average weight automobile. the different 10 bolts, the 7.5" and the older 8.2" are rubbish. beware for them, and the different oddballs, like the Olds type "O" rear. they're vulnerable, and areas are difficult to discover. discover out what you have first. by way of fact the different poster suggested, the Ford 9" is the widespread for overall performance rear ends. areas are obtainable, and Moser or Currie makes 9" housings to slot GM vehicles. I run one in a 'sixty seven Pontiac, and its super. finished custom setup grow to be approximately $2,000. got here with 31 spline axles, 9" race case, detroit locker, daytona pinion help, etc. purely regulate the inventory GM backing plates, and you will use the inventory GM drum brakes. Its a bolt-in swap and approximately bulletproof.

I agree with you, it is probably because of all the emmision crap that came into effect in 75..... but the cars were nice.... I liked everything from the 70's..... not the 80's cars...
