ever since i can remember I have wanted to be a doctor. recently, i have felt that maybe this career my not be the best for me. i talked to some people, and i think a lawyer could better suit my personality. the only thing is, my family is full of doctors, and if i became a lawyer, they would be pretty mad, and think that there are too many lawyers and they don't make enough money. is this true? is being a lawyer a satisfying job?

You need to be a bit more practical about choosing a profession that requires such a commitment. Just because there are doctors in your family, doesn't mean you have to be a doctor. To be a good attorney requires a special type of person and you better be sharp as a tack or you will be poor. Not all doctors are rich and they work some pretty gruesome hours and have to deal with death. My doctor makes rounds before and after office hours and came to visit me on Saturday and Sunday in the hospital. So how much free time do you have to spend the loot? You will have more prestige in the community as a doctor. Why don't you take a few tests and see where your abilities lie and talk to some of your counselors to get some good ideas. My advice is pick something that will pay you well so that you can live a good life, pick something that give you the respect of other people, and most important, pick something that you like to do. You will be doing for a very long time so you need to at least think you would like to do it. Take a summer job in whatever you choose to try it out. You may need to change your mind again. . .

In the US law is better. Here anyone can sue for any reason and lawyers are not bound by any code of ethics regarding fees or performance.
Doctors are an obsolete bunch. They attempt to practice medicine but the final word on diagnosis and treatment is not theirs to give. All medical matters are decided by insurance companies.

What your family thinks is so irrelevant to YOUR career ,
Or should be .
If you are choosing a life time occupation based on the family's dictates ,
Your performance will be marginal and you most likely be labeled 'low grade' .
It is the people who have their own drive and ambitions that are great at things .
Those that are obeying mommy & daddy calls even though they are over 18 end up doing thing like marrying a hustler / con man to compensate for their sub-standard life .
My recommendation - grow a backbone and follow your career path , Not someone elses .

Let me answer you this way.
A Catholic boy and his girlfriend got killed in an accident and went straight up to heaven. At the pearly gates, St. Peter invited them in, but they said, they wanted to get married in heaven, was that possible?
St. Peter left and didn't return for 3 months, after which he came back and said, yes, you can get married in heaven.
But then, the two thought, suppose it did not work out, could we get a divorce in heaven?
St. Peter put his hand on his forehead as if in deep thought. The couple asked why, what's so hard about that?
St Peter said, you know it took me a long while to find a Catholic priest here in heaven, but you can bet it will be more difficult to find a lawyer!!!
So much for that!
