i own a 2005 cobalt ss supercharged and a friend of mine pointed something out to me.The is a clear dome type button on the dash close to the windshield...i thought it was maybe a thermometer that measured the temp outside but im not sure. does anyone know what it could be?

It's the Ambient Light Sensor which works with your Daytime Running Light System. When it detects sun it turns on the DRL. When it detects darkness it will turn on your headlights if you have your switch in 'AUTO' mode. If you have a dash cover don't cover up the sensor or the car will think it's nighttime all the time and all your lights will be on and your dash lights may be dimmer.

jrever has it right, I have the same car and thats what it is. It is the light sensor that tells the car when to turn the heasdlights on. The thermometer is on the outside under the hood on the left side of the radiator.

its probably the sensor that triggers the head lights to come on when it gets dark my uncles 03 Chevy pickup has what u describe and that's what it is

did you buy it from someone else ? if so go back ask them, only things like that i have heard of its either a light or a turn signal indacater like on the side mirrors
