...that British Police said not so long ago that :

"When a child has been missing for more than 48 hours it is unlikely that the child will be found alive (...) child normally killed within 48 hrs of abduction !"

Yet everyone was very surprised when, 3 months after Madeleine disappeared, the Portuguese police said that Madeleine is "probably dead" ! ???

I honestly don't remember where I read that but I did read it.

Anyone else remember it ??

Thanks, Günther von Bischoff.
You must have a field day with all our answers (and questions) about the Police investigation in Portugal and England in the McCanns case. I would really be interested to read your opinions on this case.

I am of a similar understanding, that the chances of finding a missing child after the initial "window" immediately after they are reported absent are very slim. Cases such as that of Natascha Kampusch, who was recently found to have been kept prisoner for 8 years, appear to be very rare.

Of course, all the stats also indicate that the people most likley to be responsible for causing harm to a child, including physical assualt, sexual assault and murder, are the child's parents or carers - and yet again many people appear to be shocked that the police would even question the McCanns.

Personally I have always thought that the huge media campaign is more likely to lead to Madeleine's death, rather than her safe recovery. The risks of keeping her alive, and being seen with her, would have been much too high and if she were alive after the first few days this could actually have increased the likelihood of any perpetrator feeling they had no option but to kill her.

With any case, the first 48 hours are crucial. Most abducted children are killed within this time frame. It also applies to all other abductees, too.

It's not 48 hours, it's 36

I think anyone who doesn't think it is running on faith, of course, it is one thing to think it and another to accept it especially if you are the parent or a close relative.

There is that old saying about there being statistics, damn statistics and lies, so just because statistics tell you something, does that mean that we should just give up hope, a billion polititians would say no!
