It's not the computers, they are just machines. It's the people using the computer. Really: how lazy is a person who can't even ask themselves "What are all those red lines under what I just typed...and what can/should I do about it?"
My answer is: they don't care.
Add to that the fad of "textese" and it's a recipe for questions full of dose for does, wot for what, whatevah for whatever, weather for whether (and vice versa), c for see, u for you, r for are. Then add to the above: idk, bff, et cetera and you have people who are NOT spelling correctly to begin with.
Call me anal, but good English, complete sentences, correct spelling and good grammar are necessary communication skills. If tests are not geared to check those things, if classes are dumbed-down, if teachers are lazy, if parents don't check homework...look what we get.

Some people give the impression of being illiterate , never mind spelling correctly . I think that many writers are accustomed to communicating by Text via cellphone . They are bringing the abbreviations of Text writing to the computer . Many of the contributors to Answers are very young . I am well aware that grammar and spelling are not taught in schools today .

Yes, I think computers is undermining language usage. People are just so used to autocorrect for words like 'their' (from 'thier'), etc. sometimes they don't even know the real spelling when they write. I used to always spell 'amount' as 'ammount', and MS word autocorrected it, but I used "ammount" when I wrote. But, this is an informal site, so does it really matter to spend that extra minute correcting errors that most people will ignore?

Taknig shrotcuts is tmie honured.
Communication is not about perfect spelling. If we perfectly spell words that the other does not know, communication is lost - or at least hindered until dictionary definitions are deciphered.
If you can read my first sentence, I was successful in communicating with you. Do I really need to speel check? hehehe. I prefer people to PROOF-READ the content rather than be anal on the spelling. Dropping an "not" tends to change the meaning of a sentence.

Some people aren't aware of it, some people are aware and don't think of it, and some people (me) don't use it because with my dialup connection, nine times out of ten it never finishes and the little icon just keeps circling... and circling... and circling.
