floor- put hardi-backer on the floor use either mortar or mastic use the green hardi screws make sure they are sunk in use a "v" trowel spread out your choice let it set to where its kind- of- dry- tacky lol! then place the tile 1/8-1/4 (dep on tile size) apart use spacers(can get at HD or hardware store) lay your tile down, press hard to ensure tile is set even and securely.

for the counter same thing but for adhesive use (DAP) "red tube " kitchen caulk and adhesive its easier to get up if you mess up

Make sure everything is level with no bumps this will cause alot of problems if you don't

* for mortar it needs to be the consistency of dough, to where you can make a ball out of it

Your best bet is to try some of the D.I.Y. websites (Ask This Old House, Hometime, Bob Villa, etc.) They'll have instructions with photos, material lists, etc.

If you want more info here, tell us what the sub-floor is in the bathroom, what (if any) countertop is in the kitchen, what type of tiles (ceramic, granite, porcelain, etc.).

GOOD LUCK :)
