I have a linksys wrt54g router that I am trying to connect to the internet. I am using ethernet connections to two computers. I can access both computers, but neither computer can access the internet. The router has the upgraded firmware, and all connections are good. I have done a complete power cycle and reset and still doesnt work. I have Verizon dsl, and have determined the router to be the problem. please help!

Your problem is that you have Verizon DSL. What Verizon has started doing is assigning a 192.168.1.47 address to the internal device connected to it. When that is your router (which by default has an internal IP address of 192.168.1.1), then both the router & the DSL modem have the address 192.168.1.1. This presents a problem when the router thinks that all the packets are addressed to itself & does not send any through to the DSL modem.

To fix this, all you have to do is change your LAN IP setup in the router to something else, like 192.168.2.1. It doesn't really matter what number you use, as long as it isn't 1. Either that, or get a D-Link or Buffalo router, both of which use different IP schemes from Linksys & Netgear (although some of the newer Netgears autodetect the issue & change their own IP scheme for you).

******************************

To change an IP address, you must open your web browser (Internet Explorer, for example) & type in 192.168.1.1. Do this while you have the router DISCONNECTED from the Westell modem. The default username/password combo for a Linksys router is admin/admin. Then find the option for LAN IP set up & find where it says the 192.168.1.1. Change the first .1 to something else, click save changes, which will reboot the router (takes 30-60 seconds). Once this is done, unplug the router, turn the modem on & let the lights (DSL/Internet) come back on. Then turn the router back on. Once these lights are all back on, you should be good to go!

Have you called Linksys? They have pretty good tech support. Also, the IP address of the Linksys may be conflicting with the IP address of your Verizon DSL modem. Connect back to the modem (without the router) and get your IP address. I think the Linksys is 192.168.1.1 If they're the same, then you'd need to change the IP address of the Linksys router.

First of all, are both computers wireless? What OS are you using? Desktops or Laptops? Did you actually talk to a Verizon tech or just a customer service clown? More info please.

If wireless, try hardwiring one of the computers directly to the router and see if you can get on that way. If so, type the following into the address bar in your web browser: 192.168.1.1 That should take you to a Linksys configuration page where you can set WEP, infrastructure etc. I'll check back later.

as per computer guys comment if this is dsl you need to check those settings on the router, also check the status tab of the router to make sure that its getting an external ip address, subnet mask etc ie that its not blank and its not a 169.x.x.x address or anything like that.

your ppoe settings should of been given to you by your ISP

try to run ping command from the computer and check whether you have connectivity. try pinging to yahoo or google. if you are not getting any replies back then ping from the router you should get a reply back. try to check the wan settings and the pvi on the router...best way to troubleshoot is to look into the system logs of the router.

try logging into the router and checking the security settings, you probably have to permit them to access the internet. Linksys tech support can help. The default admin user name and password should be "admin".

If that doesn't work, and you should probably check it anyway, are the security settings on the computer themselves.

Have you configure your router to be your gateway?
You need to configure that so that the modem gives the power to the router instead of IT being the one in charge.

inside the router, you must configure the PPPOE connection and put in your dsl account and password. The router signs on for you.

Ensure you have downloaded all of the drivers for this Laptop. Can you post the laptop model? Normally when this happens after a format its due to a missing Ethernet Driver. If you're too lazy to post the Model # just google: (Laptop Model) + Ethernet Driver If you post it I can probably find it for you.
