If a baseball/football/basketball player has an injury that keeps him from playing for an entire season, does his team still have to pay his salary? Regular working people have to go on disability (at a % of salary), but these people make millions of dollars and it seems unfair if the team has to pay millions of dollars if the player cannot participate.

Yes, both are correct, however he doesn't get the full amount of the salary. He is only allotted a percentage of his pay even with the insurance. Also, if he is injured while participating in the sport or not makes a difference as well. If he gets hurt riding a motorcycle without his helmet, let's say, not that anyone would be stupid enough to do that...wouldn't be entitled to pay from the team at all but his insurance would pay a portion of his pay up to an agreed amount with the insurance company. It would have to be a covered peril listed in the agreement with the insurance company as well. Otherwise he/she is just out of luck! But then there are his endorsement deals to fall back on.

It actually depends on the contract the player has. All players receive a flat rate during training camp, no matter who they are. If a player is hurt in training camp and cant play the season he gets his salary in full. Once regular season starts they are payed based on their contract.

If their contract is guaranteed, they get paid. If not, they do not. Insurance is provided to the team to pay back for financial lose of services because of injuries if they have to pay an injured player. Players can be provided insurance as a part of the collective bargaining agreement with the NFL Players Association.

Absolutely. The athlete assumes some physical risk when he or she takes the playing field. The athlete should not be penalized financially for getting hurt. There is some insurance involved, of course.

Yes, because they are required to get insurance to ensure that if they get hurt they still get paid and the team isn't stuck with the bill.
