David Murray sells cars. He makes a base salary of $1000 per month plus a commission of 1% of the selling price of each car. For six months Mr. Murray has tabulated the number of cars he has sold for each month and the amount of money he made. If Mr. Murray sells only five cars in month seven how much money will he make?

Number of Cars Sold /// Money Made
18 ///3544
22 ///4108
10 ///2413
11 ///2554
14 ///2978
17 ///3401

take the money made and subtract 1000 for each month
then divide that amount for each month by the # of cars sold that month
That gives you the amount that Dave makes on car sold without his base salary.
Multiply that number by the 5 cars he sells in month seven and then add the 1000 of his base pay

I had no idea that Iron Maiden's guitar player also sold cars, but I digress.

Since he makes a base of $1000 per month, we can subtract this from the amount of each month to get the total amount made on comissions. Also, since this remaining amount would be 1% of the total costs of all cars combined, then multiplying the result by 100 gives the total for all the car prices combined. So after subtracting 1000 and multiplying by 100 we get:
18 ~ 254400
22 ~ 310800
10 ~ 141300
11 ~ 155400
14 ~ 197800
17 ~ 240100

Dividing these total costs by the total number of cars gives the average price-per-car for each month as about: 14133.33, 14127.27, 14130, 14127.27, 14128.57, 14123.53.
Obviously, different cars are priced differently, otherwise we'd get the same numbers here. So the best we can do is average these prices, then multiply by 5 to get the total expected amount in car sales, divide by 100 to get David's total commission amount, and finally add the base of 1000 to get the total amount approximately made in month seven.

One way to solve this problem is to compute the "average" commission over the 6 month period.
Subtract $1000 (base salary) frm the money made column to get the monthly commision.

The average commission/car sold = $141.30

Multiply by 5 = $706.50
Add $1000
and get $1706.50 (your final answer).

Good luck!

If you substract 1000 from each sum and divide by the number of cars. You'll get an average of 141.28 per car of commission.
Multiply 141.28 by 5 and add 1000 = 1706.42 but you probably want to round this to 1706.

The key to this one is figuring out how much he makes per car. It's easiest to do by looking at the 10//2413 value. If you subtract his $1000 salary you can quickly see that he makes $141.30 per car. Your answer would be $1000 + (5*141.3).

if you want it the hard way, i believe you've already got it from other answerers. it's the way your teacher want to see on your test/exam papers. but a shortcut is available actually. in month 3, DM sold 10 cars. thats twice the cars he sold in month 7. in 2413, you have double the commission you'll get in month 7, but the base salary only for one month. so

(2413+1000)/2
=3413/2
=1706.50

He sells the cars for ~ 14,250 each

So 5 cars gives 1,706
