money, fame, adventure, technology
I think technology is a big one that people leave out. Europeans learned about gunpowder, paper money, noodles and ship design from traveling to other parts of the world.

First when they thought the earth was flat, Europeans wanted to find the edge of the earth. Later when they realized it wasn't flat, they were trying to find a faster, shorter Trip to the Asian countries where they could trade. Buy & sell things.
Some conquences were the discovery of the Americas.
A place to start a new life.
Some just were excited about finding new and different socities and animals, plants, food - etc.
A big consequence was bringing disease to other continents.
We transported Rats, and mice. On the other side of the trip --Europeans learned about a whole new world that they wree facinated with.
The voyages connected the planet. Although it was a very slow way of travel, eventually we are where we were today, the planet is smaller all the time, with quick transportation.
Sharing of culturles.

As the other answers mention, it was mainly for wealth and economic power. However, for some Europeans, and especially during later colonial and imperial periods, exploration into these foreign lands was about religion. They wanted to save the "heathens" and felt the only way to do so was through Christianity. These ones often honestly felt they were benefiting the native peoples, but one consequence was a loss of traditional culture. The natives were often forced to give up not only their belief system, but also language. This take-over was a symbol of power, but it must be allowed that many Europeans were sincere in their efforts to "help."

Simple answer - for wealth. Great profits could be made if ships could get to the East Indies and collect spices which brought high prices when sold in Europe. The main consequence is that European countries developed sailing expertise which combined with the use of gunpowder weaponry made a formidable projection of force to distant lands. Sailing ships became wooden platforms for cannons which could be used to coerce foreign people from the Middle East to India to China to Japan. World European domination would be evident by the 1800s due to these floating artillery batteries.

The were looking for fame, glory and riches for the mother country. The consiquences, not really anything bad, when they finally dscovered the new world they founded for the mother coutnry and took the gold from the native people. So the only consequences would be the Natives were attacked, killed, enslaved, and pushed out of their homes and freedom.
