I want to use it as a HDD and there is an eSATA port next to my USB port on the HDD casing but have no idea what this will do. Any advice will be good.
both my HDD are 400g if that also helps

SATA or IDE external drive using the USB interface will have the same speed which is limited by USB 2.0 bandwidth. e-SATA is much faster BUT it will only connect to a PC w/ e-SATA port.

A SATA drive should have a noticeable increase speed over an IDE drive when transfer of large amounts of data.

eSATA should have a huge improvement in speed over USB 2.0 and FireWire.

eSATA is another type of Hot-Swappable connection like USB and Firewire. It only works with SATA drives, it doesn't work if you put a IDE drive in an enclosure and connect using eSATA.

If you look at the picture I referenced below - you'll see the item with SATA connector. The other end is IDE which will fit on to your hard drive.
