My wife and I talk about this all the time and the people who join terrorist organizations are a lot like gang members. They may use slightly different methods. But they tend to feel disaffected so they strike out against. "the man". They feel justified in exacting justice upon an oppressor. That's how many terrorist view the United States.

That depends, there are flavors.
1. There is the "terrorism" borne of ideology and the idea that you are oppressed but are righteous in your beliefs (The American founders to Al Queda fit the bill here.)
2. Desperation - these are the soldiers and sometimes the coordinators of a movement, willing to die for the cause or do "whatever it takes" (Think the French underground, Polish partisans or pretty much any schmuck that straps a bomb to themselves)

There are a lot. Religion is one. When the Jews wanted to occupy Palestine they took actions that would be called terrorist against the Palestinians. Once they won, they were called Freedom Fighters. Al Qaeda got its start fighting against occupation of Afghanistan by the USSR and it was armed by the US. Its true, the US gave Al Qaeda its start. Ronald Reagan, to be exact. Remember that when people try to tell you he was the greatest President.

According to Bin Laden we all have to convert to Islam and give up democracy if we want peace. From that I conclude that it's their twisted religion and their hatred of freedom that leads them to attack us. If the PC police will forgive me for noticing, their Quran instructs them to kill all Jews, Christians, and pagans.
