I think it only needs to make a profit to be considered a box office success.

Naturally this depends how much the movie cost to make.

However, I think if the gross movie takings equals the budget of the movie, then they make enough extra from dvd sales (and possibly merchandising) to mean the film is profitable.

usaly twice what it cost too make it? maybe 3 time as much in some case because actor paid up front! so if cost 30 mil. to make then it would take 90 mil. to break even so to make a profit say 110 mil..
