a negative & a positive symbol next to each simplify to a negative symbol as in these examples

+5 + -8 = +5 - 8 = -3

-7 - +2 = -7 -2 = -9

-------------------------------------------------
2 negative symbols next to each other make a positive symbol like in this example.
-5 - - 3 = -5 + 3 = -2

---------------------------------------------------

lastly it does not matter what position your terms are in, for example

4 -2 = -2 +4 = -2 - -4 = +4 - +2 = +4 + -2 = 2

these are all different ways of expressing the same argument

Addition if the signs are the same, add the numbers and keep the same sign. Example -2 + -3 = -5 or +2 + +3= +5
Addition if the signs are different, subtract the smaller from the larger and take the sign of the larger. Therefore, +7 + -4= +3 and -8 + +3 = -5
For subtraction, the easy way to do it is to just change it to addition and change the sign of the second integer and then follow the rules above for addition: Using your example
-5 - -3 can be converted to -5 + 3 which equals -2

Think of it like you owe money and money is owed to you. negative integer is money you owe and positive integer is money that is owed to you. So in the first case you owe someone 8 dollars and they owe you 5 dollars, how would it net out? You owe them 3 dollars, of course. -3 would be the answer in integer terms.
In the second case, you owe them 5 dollars and you also owe them negative 3 dollars. Whoa, how can you owe someone a negative amount, it's because they really owe it to you...so a rule to remember is negative a negative is a positive.
or -5 +3 = -2

The third case, you owe them 7 dollars and you borrow 2 more, so you owe them 9 or negative a positive is the same as a negative.
-7-2= -9

when you see 2 negative (or positive) signs together, the sign will be changed to 1 positive sign. If not, the sign will be changed to negative sign.

Got it?
