What are some of the ways that I could teach children how to notice patterns in words. For example, i could teach them that if they know the word cat they could also know the words mat, sat, fat, and rat along with other rhyming words.
Do you have anymore examples to share?

You can make a game out of it where you put like words mixed with non-like words up on the board or overhead. Have them circle the like words and/or patterns and put an x through the words that don't follow the pattern. Then use sentences and again have them circle the like words.

Dr Zeus books are very good at rhyming words....however, when my children started school they were shown basic word walls that contained the words, that, the, mum, dad, if, is, in, of etc all basic reading words once they learnt that and recognised them they would go to a second sheet that had "what, them, they etc....they picked up their reading very quickly, best of luck with it all.

find a program called 'words their way' and do word study programs. it works with key words and there are different activites to do each day and new words every week. it is spelling/phonics in disguise. I'd tell you more but I taught 2nd grade all day and am too tired.

these are called "word families" it depends on how old the children are and whether they learn via phonetics or sight. 85% learn by phonetics but the other 15% never will :)
