There is another candidate for the world's highest mountain, apart from Everest and Oahu: The mountain top furthest from the centre of the earth is the summit of Chimborazo in Ecuador, because it is near to the equator (the earth bulges slightly at the equator, because of its rotation). It only has an elevation of 6268 metres., but is 2000 metres further from the centre of the earth than Everest. At one time, before the Himalayas had been measured, Chimborazo was thought to be the world's highest mountain, and expeditions were organised to climb it. By the time it was climbed by Edward Whymper (of Matterhorn fame) in 1880, it was known not to be the highest in elevation, but Whymper's altitude record stood for some time.
