The war was fought between the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) and the United States-supported Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam). The result of the war was defeat of the Southern and American forces, and unification of Vietnam under the communist government of the North.

French???????
The U.S. deployed large numbers of troops to South Vietnam between the end of the First Indochina War in 1954, and 1973. Some U.S. allies also contributed forces. U.S. military advisers first became involved in Vietnam in 1950, assisting French colonial forces.

After WWII the French tried to reassert their colonial power in Vietnam and was met with resistance by a movement lead by Communist. The French lost, and left in 1954 under an agreement that temporally divided the nation, north and south, with the plan to hold elections after 2 years. America fearing that the communist would win the election intervened to create a separate country in the south, and sent a small contingent of military advisers. When resistance, supported by the north, to the new government in the south arose, America sent more troops. Russia and China then gave assistance to the north, and Vietnam became a battlefield for the cold war.
