Propaganda originally was an information release of a government, business or religious body. During WWII the word was used by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, and the word connoted an information release by a government, which was laced with deceit, half-truths, and lies. Look up Dr Goebbels.

The aim of propagandism is to influence people's opinions or behaviors actively, rather than merely to communicate the facts about something. For example, propaganda might be used to gather either support or disapproval of a certain position, rather than to simply present the position, or to try to convince people to buy something, rather than to simply let them know there is some thing on the market.
Propaganda can be classified according to the source and nature of the message. White propaganda generally comes from an openly identified source, and is characterized by gentler methods of persuasion, such as standard public relations techniques and one-sided presentation of an argument. Black propaganda is identified as being from one source, but is in fact from another. This is most commonly to disguise the true origins of the propaganda, be it from an enemy country or from an organization with a negative public image. Grey propaganda is propaganda without any identifiable source or author.

If you want to be ambitious, you might as well read the book on Propaganda.
Edward Bernays, who was related to Sigmund Freud, is often viewed as the father of public relations, and wrote an interesting book in 1928 that explores the role of propaganda in a democratic society. In "Propaganda," Bernays argues that public opinion can be scientifically manipulated to avoid chaos and conflict within modern society.
Unfortunately, many autocratic dictators have adopted this same principle to control information to help govern their countries and eliminate potential information vehicles for dissent. You can actually read Bernay's book on line at this URL:
