When Caesar became Dictator of Rome the Roman Republic fell & the Roman Imperial Empire was born & from that point on only Emperors ruled.

Since the war on terror will probably never officially end US Presidents, from Bush on, will have so much more power than they were ever meant to have that the other two branches of US Govt. won't really matter much anymore (Congress & Judicial). Making US Presidents virtually US Dictators.

So has the war on terror brought the end to the US Republic & do Americans even know that & do they even care?

No, the president has not acted outside of his constitutional authority. If you dare to recall the fact that congress (one of those other branches) authorized the war, you're whole "empire" theory is shot to pieces.

The Constitution of the US established this country as a constitutional republic. Through the many decades, it morphed into a democracy. My guess is that after the industrial revolution money, capitalism and the structured markets formed a mentality of democracy as "fair" manner to govern the internal affairs of this country. This FAIR approach carried on from then and became a slogan for progress and equality. In actuality, democracy is never mentioned in our constitution nor in the Federalist papers. Somewhere between the birth of this country with its steemed form of government and today, we have lost our way by dishonoring and misrepresenting our road map, our Constitution.

I'll let you look up the differences between a republic and a democracy, and trust me, they're different. Especially when you consider their archaic meanings, when at time of this country's birth, it was supposed to mean. So, no we haven't been a true republic for over a century or so, and no, we're not yet an empire. Though we may be morphing into an empire of sorts, only time will tell. GNF

Greece is a European democratic country, so I do not understand what you mean by "broke human rights". Human rights of whom? But I'll give you an honest answer as an archaeologist: Come and visit our museums of Macedonia, see what the Greek language is written on the vases, the grave stones, etc, visit Thessaloniki with its magnificent Bysantine Churches and read about its history which is tottally Greek, and then bother ask why Greece does not accept your fake and malicious claims.

It's not an either/or choice. A nation can be a Republic AND an Empire. Both Rome's Republic and Britain had pluralistic systems of governance and also were imperial powers.

I think the question you want to ask is whether American imperialist activities are a corrupting factor on American political systems. My thoughts are a qualified yes, but there are other factors that go into the mix.

Cheers.

I think you make a valid point to consider. The Executive Orders that Bush has implemented are here to stay unless they are rescinded or superseded by new ones. That's way too much raw power in place for any president, Democrat or Republican, to (mis)use. It's much like the lid being opened on Pandora's box and the ones that we need to close the lid are the very ones that have the most power to gain by leaving it open. We need a president and Congress that will commit to cleaning up this mess, but this issue is too 'hot' to be a 'hot button' issue in any campaigns... everyone needs to consider their vote very carefully!

On September 21, 2006, Bush submitted a continuation of national emergency, thus renewing Proclamation 7463 of September 14, 2001.

In May 2007, Bush signed the National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive (NSPD 51/HSPD-20).
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2007/05/20070509-12.html

Unlike the National Emergency Act that sets up congress as a balance, the new directive:
1. does not contain any provisions allowing for congressional approval or oversight.
2. creates the new position of National Continuity Coordinator without Congress approval
3. negates any requirement that the president submit proof of the existence of a National Emergency to Congress

It isn't an Empire until one side rolls over and dies ! Just don't hold your Breath and hope that it's The GOP. The Democrats have been collapsing ever since the start of The Cold War. I'd put my money on them to roll over and die first. Then The Rise of The Empire will be complete !

Lincoln was Julius Caesar,

FDR was like Constantine, ruling over the greatest period of expansion,

and Bush will be written off as one of many uninspired leaders who inherited a powerful empire and squandered it.

U understand history. But no leader changes a Republic into an empire, they simply recognize the change has already taken place by it's expansion.

For a President to be a dictator, they would have to stay in power. Since Bush is not going to stay in power when his second term is up, your argument falls apart pretty easily.
