Reginald beat me to it.

The phrase " a mile a minute" comes form this fact and has nothing to do with going 60 M.P.H. on land!

It's derived from the Earths circumference at the Equator, or 360 x 60 = 21,600 nautical miles, times 1.15 = 24,840 statute miles

I just answered this question for another person a short
time ago; are you both taking the same navigation class?
Anyway, here it is:
A nautical mile is by definition one minute of latitude or
one-sixtieth of a degree of latitude around the earth.
A nautical mile is 6080.66 feet, so in statute miles it is
1 nm = 6080.66/5280 = 1.1515 statute miles
