Given that the moon's phases are caused by its orbit around the Earth, one would assume that it's an answer with similar, if not identical time periods (if one didn't know)

Then you take common sense that it's not 1 day (by looking at the thing yourself), and only one answer even makes sense: 27 1/3 days // 29 1/2 days.

FYI: The phase takes longer because the Earth (around which the Moon orbits) also orbits the Sun, and thus the angle between the Sun and Earth is advancing as well, meaning the Moon has to go further than one complete orbit to catch up to the same sun-earth-moon phase angle.
