seeking out the unknowns and expanding our knowledge, understanding & developing ourselves in the process.

Yes, I totally admit I am a old Trekkie. But this is a futurist Q asked in the philosophy category. So be nice and share by answering the Q.

Wow, I glad you asked this, as I've always admired the way Star Trek -Next Generation pertrays humans in the far future; well adjusted, calm, reasonable, intellectual, nonviolent, logical.

As much as i wish i could say yes. i just don't think it will ever be possible. I think the closest sphere to us is 20 light years away. That means we would have to have a spacecraft traveling at the speed of light for 20 years to get there. Houever, when i was a kid and if told about cell phones in the future, i would have said impossible or the internet or 'yahoo answers'. So you never know what will be possible in the future. Eventhough it's against all logic, I have a gut feeling that someday we will go where no man has gone before, We must, we must.

While I am a fan, it wasn't a realistic view of how exploration into space would develop.

Much of the planning now is for arks that will leave the planet and never return. New generations of humans being born in space and never being able to live on Earth anyway. I'd still sign up though.

"Oh, God, is there never to be an age of happiness? Is there never to be any rest?"
"Rest enough for the individual man--too much, and too soon, and we call it Death. But for Man no rest and no ending. He must go on, conquest beyond conquest. First this little planet with its winds and ways, and then all the laws of mind and matter that restrain him. Then the planets about him, and at last out across immensity to the stars. And when he has conquered all the deeps of space and all the mysteries of time, still he will be beginning."
-- From H. G. Wells' film, "Things to Come"

I think it would be awesome if we had the capability right now I would be on the next shuttle out! It's pretty obvious that we are at a stand still right now, nothing new to hear about our great universe, I do think progress will be made, but I honestly don't think it will happen in my life time. This country and others are to busy destroying each other to concentrate on such wonders, but what a fascinating thought!

Yahoooo! ...To Boldly Go Where No Man/One (TNG) Has Gone Before!!! Absolutely I think we should explore the universe. I think first of all we should colonize the moon and take some of the environmental strain off of our own precious Earth (ie., tropical rainforests, etc.)

I would love it if we were to explore purely for the sake of exploring.
Unfortunately due to the extreme cost I believe the only explorers we will see will be financed by corporations for the purpose of profit and laying property claims.
I guess we are kinda like Star Trek......maybe like the Ferengie...LOL

Nope. I don't have much hope for the human species. We're much more likely to destroy ourselves.
